Prime Minister Donald Tusk held talks with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin at the World Economic Forum in Davos. They discussed the energy security and the deliveries of Russian gas to Poland. PM Putin has also accepted the invitation to visit Poland this spring.
The meeting lasted longer than initially planned and the two prime ministers discussed Polish-Russian economic relations and the recent European gas crisis. Donald Tusk admitted that they discussed decreased supplies of Russian gas to Poland via Ukraine and said that the “problem will soon be solved”. The officials also touched on unofficial reports indicating Russia’s will to refrain from deploying the Iskander missile in Kalinigrad, the Russian enclave bordering Poland. It was reported earlier this week that Russia might cancell plans to install the Iskander system in Kaliningrad near the Polish border if the US backed down from installing the anti-missile system in Poland and the Czech Republic, although Moscow has not confirmed this. Donald Tusk has said Vladimir Putin’s statement on the issue leaves room for optimism, as Russia was not inclined to site their missiles in the region.
