Mieczysław Karłowicz
One hundred years ago Polish composer Mieczysław Karłowicz died in the Tatra mountains at the age of 33, buried by a snow avalanche.
We look at the significant achievement of a composer who brought Polish music, somewhat backward at the start of the 20th century, into the mainstream of European trends.
Mieczyslaw Karłowicz is one of most important figures in Polish 20th century music and one of the most colourful personalities in Polish culture. He started taking violin lessons at the age of seven, studied composition in Warsaw and Berlin, wrote a cycle of beautiful songs between 16 and 22 years of age and was 26 when he conducted the Berlin Philharmonic in his own symphony. He also had to his credit six symphonic poems and a violin concerto.
