Erika Steinbach, leader of German Expellees Union, will not be a board member of 'Visible Sign' project.
Advisor on foreign affairs to the PM, Wladyslaw Bartoszewski, has returned from Berlin where he discussed the state of Polish-German relations in the context of the 'year of anniversaries' as 2009 has been labelled in the two countries' calendar of bilateral contacts.
The talks of the Polish representative with Chancellor Angela Merkel dealt with widely perceived contacts, but minister Bartoszewski admitted one of the major points had been the speculated board nominations to the so-called 'Visible Sign'. The project concerns plans to open a remembrance center devoted to the plight of German people resettled by force or due to political considerations from lands once inhabited by them.
Though the very idea has evoked mixed reactions in Poland, practically all Polish politicians have voiced opposition to the considered nomination of Erika Steinbach, leader of the German Expellees Union known for its radical approach to the issue. According to Bartoszewski, the German government head pledged to undertake adequate steps to avoid nominating Mrs. Steinbach to a member position in the board of the planned museum center.
