Crime in Poland is on the decrease, making this country one of the safest in the European Union.

The results of research carried out by the Institute of Justice, attached to the Justice Ministry, and published in a Polish daily, confirm international statistics, which put Poland in towards the end of the list of countries most threatened by crime.

Over the past two years the number of people in Poland who have fallen victim to crime has plunged by 40%. 70% of the population say they feel safe in opposition to 30% who say they don’t – 20 years ago the rate was exactly the opposite. Figures published by a Polish daily, citing the Institute of Justice, show that the crime rate in Poland dropped in 2007 to levels from 1990. European statistics put Poland in the 25th place on a list of 36 countries. Generally the public does feel safe… and trusts the police.

While the tendency continues on its downward trend, the actual cause of this might not actually be a reason to rejoice: it might be emigration and demography.
