Erika Steinbach

German Chancellor Angela Markel expressed her support for the chief of the League of Expellees in Germany Erika Steinbach. It came two weeks after Steinbach’s withdrawal from the board of the foundation which is to oversee the museum documenting the plight of Germans who were forced to leave their homes in some areas of Europe as a result of the post-war shift of the borders.

We take a look at Polish-German relations in an interview which Michal Kubicki recorded with Marek Magierowski of the Rzeczpospolita daily. He first explains why Erika Steinbach talks about ‘expellees’ while Poles prefer to talk of Germans having been ‘resettled’ during the final stages of World War Two.
