No popcorn here...

After cinemas began showing live broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera in New York more and more cinema chains in Poland are presenting transmissions of opera and ballet productions.

Report and interview with Edyta Pawłowicz by Elżbieta Krajewska.

High opera to the crunch of popcorn and burble of soft drink straws? Why not – one after another cinema chains in Poland are adding opera to their repertoire. The idea of live opera shows on a cinema screen is already popular around the world. This week Multikino launched its project with a transmission from the Opera Royale de Wallonie.

Honorary patronage of the project has been assumed by the National Opera in Warsaw but in Poland not only Warsaw has the opportunity to see opera live in high-definition. Multikino will be showing live HD transmissions of Carmen in April and Aida in July. Meanwhile another cinema chain, Cinema City is now starting its showings of opera and ballet performances, recorded at London’s Royal Opera House within a project they are calling Cinemaestro.
