An estimated ten thousand people, including politicians, diplomats, Warsaw inhabitants and foreign tourists, came to the capital last Saturday to participate in the annual Schuman Parade and demonstrate support for the idea of European integration.

The Parade was part of the 16th Polish European Meetings held in Warsaw between May 1 and May 9 under the slogan Past-Present-Future. The main organizer of the event was the Polish Robert Schuman Foundation created in 1991.

Apart from the colorful march through the streets of Warsaw, there were stands of the European Commission and other European institutions as well as Warsaw-based foreign institutes and a place where visitors could cast their votes in the mock elections to the European Parliament. There were also educational games, contests as well as a concert wrapping up the parade in the European Village set up in the center of Poland’s capital.

Danuta Isler talked to some of its participants asking them why they came to Warsaw often from various regions of the country.
