Last year the European Commission ordered Poland to sell the Gdynia and Szczecin yards, after ruling that Poland had provided illegal state aid to keep them running. The tendering process was open, while some 9,000 employees of the yards feared for their work.

The selected bidder the United International Trust paid 288 million zloty (64 million euros) for 25 out of the 31 assets of the Gdynia yard. The remaining six will be auctioned at the end of May.

The investor expressed the wish to continue with the shipbuilding production, pointed Treasury Minister Aleksander Grad, after naming the bidder on Thursday.

The fate of the Szczecin shipyard is to be known soon. The Treasury Ministry is holding the first bid for the yard's assets.

The third Poland's shipyard, located in Gdansk, which has already been privatised to ISD Polska - a unit of Ukraine's Donbass, is awaiting a separate European Commisison decisison, on the state aid it had received.
