Escalating confrontation of NATO mission forces with Taliban before elections in Afghanistan.
Report by Slawek Szefs
A group of some one hundred Taliban rebels ambushed a patrol of Afghan army and Polish soldiers in the Ajiristan district of Ghazni province. Four Poles were wounded and one killed in the exchange of fire. The Polish command had been anticipating an increase in armed Taliban activity with the approaching presidential elections in Afghanistan scheduled for August 20th.
Until recently, the Ajiristan district had been the one of the Taliban strongpoints in the Ghazni province in care of the Polish military contingent. Following a massive operation code-named 'Over The Top' in mid July, Polish forces pushed back most of the rebel groupings, while the local population of the region received humanitarian assistance.
