The coastal city of Gdansk is playing host to two festivals commemorating the ideas of solidarity and peace.

The Solidarity festival honouring the Solidarity Trade Union and remembering the strike of August 1980 , and the Solidarity of Arts which broadly looks at the ideas of freedom.

The Solidarity of Arts is in its first edition. The event is organised by the authorities of the city of Gdansk, the Polish Film Institute and the European Solidarity center in Gdnask. The name of the festival intends to point out the traditions of freedom, and refers to the universal nature of art which crosses all borders and divisions. Solidarity of Arts opens on August 15th , while the Solidarity Festival is launched Friday evening.
