European men's basketball championships EUROBASKET 2009 are starting in the western Polish city of Wroclaw today.
Danuta Isler reports
During the next two weeks sixteen teams and their top notch players, including Marcin Gortat of Poland or Tony Parker of France will compete for the title of the best national team in Europe.
This is the second time Poland is hosting the European Basketball Championships after 46 years. In 1963 also in Wroclaw the Polish national squad won silver medal with the Soviet Union winning the championships. The repetition of that success and beating the current European champion Russia would be very difficult but Marcin Gortat, the leader of the Polish squad and player of NBA's Orlando Magic has a lot of faith in the team which in the first phase faces Bulgaria, Turkey and Lithuania.
