A large-scale inventory and cross-indexing of the historic tombs and sculptures is under way.

Founded in 1790, the Powazki Cemetery extends over an area of 43 hectares and has some 60 thousand tombs. It is the resting place of many prominent politicians, writers, scientists, musicians and artists. The pre-war documentation was destroyed during World War II. Many of the historic tombstones and sculptures are badly in need of repair and renovation.
