The opening ceremony was attended by Rita Gombrowicz, the writer's widow, who gave the museum many personal items belonging to the writer, including his typewriter, pens and letters as well as posters announcing premieres of his works around the world and translations of his books. She said that Gombrowicz hated museums but he would change his mind when seeing the one devoted to his life and work.

The museum, the branch of the Museum of Literature in Warsaw, is housed in a newly-restored mansion built in 1914 which once belonged to the writer's elder brother, Jerzy. The location is not a coincidence as the writer was a frequent visitor to Wsola between 1924 and 1939.
