The Center was established thanks to the efforts of partners from the scientific consortium with its main aim being the promotion of modern India in this part of Europe. In a competition for an EU grant for the project, the Warsaw University beat, among others, those from France and Germany. An innovative programme of MA studies in contemporary India politics and business should start there within the next two years.

There are fifteen partners in the consortium, including the best European universities like Oxford or the ones from Florence and Madrid. The University of Hyderabad and the Jawaharlal Nehru University are the main Indian partners. This is the only center of this kind in this part of Europe and one of only a few on the old continent which may also explain why it gained the support and financial backing of the European Union which last October approved a grant of 270 milion euro for its establishment.
