The annual government budget to integrate Roma minority reaches 10 million zloty a year. With around half of Poland’s Roma population living in the southern Malopolska province, it’s no surprise that 3 mln zloty is directed here.

Report by John Beauchamp

There are around 40 beneficiaries who receive the money, half of which are Roma organisations, the other half are local councils in the region.

While the government programme is geared towards educating young Roma, the Roma Employment Activation Centre in Tarnow also acts as a liason between the Roma and regional employment offices. If they don’t feel like working for anyone, they can take classes on how to set up their own business, paid for by the European Social Fund.
