Does Poland stand a chance of becoming natural gas eldorado? Some analysts are saying 'yes' given the fact that, according to various reports, shale gas reserves in this country may amount to a minimum 3 trillion cubic meters. If they are true, Poland would have 200 times more gas than it uses annually.

Several foreign energy giants have already applied for digging licenses here. Various unconfirmed estimates indicate there may be even 3 trillion cubic meters of shale gas here. If they are true, this country would have 200 times more gas than it uses annually.

Energy experts claim that shale gas exploration may be the future of Poland's energy sector but it will become known several years of testing. The head of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso said that the EU has been researching the topic and its results will only indicate whether this unconventional source of natural gas can be profitable for Europe.

Poland currently imports two-thirds of its natural gas from Russia so if such estimates are true it will be a chance for this country to shake off dependence on supplies from its eastern neighbour.
