'The Brave Eleven' is the title of a collection of essays devoted to little known heroes who fought for Poland in their own way. The book and an accompanying campaign are the work of Poland's National Center of Culture in cooperation with Polish Radio, 90 years after Poland regained independence. Aleksy Rżewski fought for independence. Kazimierz Nowak traveled across Africa on his own. Wanda Gertz was in combat disguised as a man. Józef Herzog - fought on all fronts of the First and Second World Wars. Witold Pilecki volutneered to Auschwitz to help inmates escape. Marian Rejewski was in the team of mathematicians who broke the Enigma code. Bronisław Kowalczewski organized escapes from POW camps. General Elzbieta Zawacka was the only female courier of "Cichociemni" - a secret unit of the Polish Army in exile. Danuta Skorenko was an opposition activist. The Ulma family were murdered for saving Jews and general August Emil Fieldorf "Nil" was deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Polish Home Army during World War II.
These are the eleven unsung heroes featured in the book "The Brave Eleven" released by the National Center of Culture on the occassion of the 90th anniversary of Poland's independence.
