The EU Commissioner for External Relations paid a visit to the Polish capital to discuss the main provisions of the Eastern Neighborhood Policy prepared by Brussels, a project initiated by Poland and Sweden.

It envisages EU support for democratic and pro-market reforms in six countries: Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Azarbaijan, Moldova and, conditionally, in Belarus. Details of the plan are to be officially announced on December 3rd.
Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner confirmed that the immediate prospects for Ukrainian EU membership remain bleak, but assured of the Union's positive attitude towards the Eastern neighbors. The Brussels official also stressed the importance of continuing negotiations on a new EU-Russia cooperation agreement.
