2009 is the year of many important anniversaries in the Polish political calendar. The Warsaw government is planning a get-together of European leaders to mark the June 1989 elections which led to the collapse of communism.

In these partially-free parliamentary elections Solidarity scored a landslide victory, winning all the seats that it was allowed to contest. The idea of an international meeting in Gdansk is to highlight the role of the Solidarity movement and of the Polish election in June 1989 – the event that preceded the fall of the Berlin Wall – in the overthrow of communism.
