The Lower house of parliament – the Sejm – has written a resolution to push President Lech Kaczynski to sign the Lisbon Treaty as quickly as possible.
The resolution was prepared by the Sejm’s Foreign Affairs Committee.
During yesterday’s debate in parliament, the Sejm Deputy Speaker, Stefan Niesiolowski, appealed to Kaczynski to sign the Treaty if he desires full integration in the European Union and if he wants Poland to be treated like partner in terms of politics, security and energy policy.
Pawel Kowal, of the opposition Law and Justice party, accused the ruling Civic Platform of not allowing multi-party debate about Poland’s desired position in the EU. According to Kowal, Tusk’s Cabinet has neglected to consider the idea of promoting an eastern partnership and creating stronger energy ties with both the Ukraine and Georgia.
President Kaczynski has previously stated that he will sign the Lisbon Treaty if the Irish referendum will pass. Ireland is set to hold another referendum regarding the Treaty in 2009 after the previous one in Fall 2008 did not pass. (mmj)
