The search for a rescuer who disappeared following a methane explosion at the Krupinski coal mine in Suszec, Silesia, continues into the sixth day.

So far one rescuer and a miner have been confirmed dead with 11 hospitalised, although doctors are confident that all those under care will make a full recovery.

The emergency services admit that conditions are difficult in the mine, with a fire yet to be fully contained, but they have not given up hope that the missing man may be recovered.

Radio contact with the rescuer disappeared without trace on Thursday night, just hours after was thought to have been a methane blast.

In September 2009, twenty miners perished following an explosion at the Wujek mine in Silesia. Two days of national mourning followed. (nh)
