• Government late with economic rescue plan, says opposition

Leader of the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party Jaroslaw Kaczynski, has criticized the government’s efforts to alleviate growing economic hardship in Poland, saying that it has acted too late and with too little.

According to Kaczynski, Prime Minister Donald Tusk should have tried to minimize the negative effects of the economic slow-down several months ago.

On Tuesday the government adopted a new plan to tackle the economic slow down and acknowledged that the financial crisis might affect Poland more than was initially expected. In connection with the new project, Prime Minister Tusk ordered the heads of particular ministries to find 17 billion zlotys (some 3.9 billion euros) in savings to compensate for declining budget revenues as the economy slows.

Vice head of PiS Aleksandra Natalli-Świat said yesterday that the government has focused on limiting budget deficit at the exclusion of other measures. According to her, a better solution would be to concentrate on investment. At the same time Natalli-Świat declared that PiS will support all governmental projects stimulating economic growth.

Jarosław Kaczyński added that the government’s proposition to reduce budget spending by 17 billion zlotys will be very difficult to implement. (jm)
