President Lech Kaczynski is to veto news laws concerning the European Parliament elections in June.
He is also considering sending the legislation, drawn up by the government and passed by parliament, to the Constitutional Tribunal, head of the presidential chancellery Piotr Kownacki has informed.
The amendment to the election law, prepared by the ruling Civic Platform but criticised strongly by the opposition Law and Justice party, aimed to introduce three important changes: a two-day ballot, the possibility to vote via proxy and decreasing the number of Polish representatives in the European Parliament from 54 to 50.
President Kaczynski’s veto means that June’s elections to the European Parliament will take place in accordance with hitherto prevailing regulations. The head of state is against two-day voting on the grounds that it would increase the cost of the elections by some 30 million zlotys (6.5 million euros) (jm/pg)
