President Lech Kaczynski supports the idea of separating the Polish capital city of Warsaw from the Masovia region.
The head of state is concerned so that the province that surrounds the capital will lose out on much needed EU funds because it hosts the richest city in Poland within its borders.
According to Lech Kaczynski, the separation should be carried out before the elections to local governments in 2010.
The ministry of regional development, which is responsible for the division of EU funds, is rather skeptical towards Kaczynski’s idea.
“So far we don’t know the rules for the division of structural funds, which will be introduced after 2013. They are likely to change, but it’s too soon to decide on the separation of Warsaw from Masovia,” said Stanislaw Krakowski at the ministry’s press bureau. (jm)
