The EU-US summit in Prague starting April 5 is to bring US President Barack Obama and all 27 EU leaders together.
The US President’s first trip to Europe seems to be a good chance for him to get to know European heads of state. However, it is still not clear who will represent Poland during the Prague summit – Prime Minister Donald Tusk, President Lech Kaczynski or maybe both of them.
“I am astounded that president is going to the EU-US summit. It was agreed, that only the PM will go to Prague,” Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told Dziennik. The government delegation has been preparing for several weeks to go to the Czech Republic.
The Presidential Cabinet informed press about Kaczynski’s plans yesterday. Evidently the President changed his mind when it was announced that his US counterpart will hold bilateral meetings with each of the 27 European leaders. Each leader will be given a thirty minute audience with Obama. In the case of Poland, this means that either the time will be split between the PM and the President or the three politicians will meet together.
Similar problems appeared in the Czech Republic. It is still being discussed as to who should welcome President Obama at the airport. Prague sent two official invitations to the White House and both of them were accepted. According to protocol, Obama is to have two official hosts: PM Mirek Topolanek and President Vaclav Klaus.
