• Anticorruption group within Civic Platform
  • 06.04.2009

The ruling Civic Platform (PO) has formed an anticorruption group operating within the party after accusations of sleaze.

The group consists of five PO deputies who will keep watchful eye on their party colleagues. The decision to form the group was taken after the recent political scandal involving PO deputy Tomasz Misiak.

The PO anticorruption group will be headed by Miroslawa Nykiel. “The aim of the group is to make sure that none of the our deputies or senators who has shares in a company can influence legislators to pass laws favourable for that company,” explains Nykiel.

In order to prevent any clash of interests between business and politics, Civic Platform deputies will be asked to describe in detail what kind of business activity they are involved in and what drafts they are currently working on.

The idea of the anticorruption group was proposed after a scandal involving Tomasz Misiak. Misiak, as a PO senator, worked on a special shipyard bill, yet he concealed the fact that his company - Work Service - helps unemployed shipyard workers from Gdynia and Szczecin find a new job.

Originally, the head of Civic Platform, Prime MInister Donald Tusk asked the deputies to get rid of all shares they held but the idea was strongly criticized.

At the moment party deputies are considering the introduction of new regulations on obtaining seats in Parliament. It is possible that in the future those who want to become MPs will not be able to run their own business or hold shares. (mg/pg)
