Prime Minister Donald Tusk, former President Lech Walesa and the Queen of Denmark were invited to the congress of the native inhabitants of Kaszuby, northern Poland – but President Lech Kaczynski was not invited though he has made it plain that he would like to come.
“If the President does not have any important meetings scheduled for July 4, he would like to come to Kaszuby,” confirmed Piotr Karczewski, the President’s social consultant.
The President’s decision to turn up at Kaszuby - the region in north western Poland where Prime Minister Tusk hails from – has caused consternation among Kaszubians. “We are surprised by the news and we do not really know what to do,” said Adam Leik, deputy mayor of Bytow, where the congress will take place. Later, in a more diplomatic way, he added: “We did not invite the President, but we will be glad to see him at the ceremony”.
The mayor of Bytow Ryszard Sylka later explained that no invitations to the congress have yet been sent and that the congress is open to anyone who wants to take part in it, regardless of their political views. He assured that Kaszubians would be honoured to receive the President.
Bytow’s authorities are drawn from Civic Platform, the party headed by the Prime Minister and Donald Tusk has already confirmed his arrival at the congress.
If both top Polish politicians participate in the congress it may cause similar disagreement to the one that broke out at the EU summit in Brussels. (mg/pg)
