• Councilor’s wife objectified
  • 05.05.2009

Jakub Opara, a Warsaw councilor from the Law and Justice party, included his wife as part of a property declaration in which politicians are supposed to enlist their belongings.

In their property declarations the councilors enlisted cars, real estates, family heirlooms, horses, and even plots in a cemetery. Yet one of the councilors Jakub Opara from the Law and Justice party (PiS) went even further and included his wife as part of his property. Later he explained he did it because he considers her “priceless”.

Warsaw councilors are rather wealthy. According to this year’s property declarations, among them there are sixteen millionaires and only eight people whose belongings are worth less than 100,000 zlotys (23 thousand euros).

Opara is not the first Polish politician who has played this kind of prank. Tadeusz Cymanski, another PiS deputy, included his wife in his property declaration because he wanted to “protest against equal treatment of house wives and working women”. At that time his wife was bringing up five children and, as the MP said, she was not working, but slaving.

Polish feminists were outraged at the form of the protest and accused Cymanski of objectifying his wife. (mg)
