It has been a month since the signal officer, Stefan Zielonka, who knows the deepest secrets of Polish army disappeared.
Press reveals that the officer suffered from depression and wanted to quit the army, but his superiors did not agree. Zielonka also had family problems. The cypher is separated with his wife, but he lived with her in one flat. It was Zielonka’s wife who annoucned that he disappeared on 19 April.
"The search is going on. Hypotheses are being verified. Let me just repeat, that Zielonka’s disappearance has no impact either on the security of the Army Defense Intelligence Service, or the security of the state,” Defense Minister Bogdan Klich declared.
Intelligence agencies are not excluding any option as to what has happened to him - suicide, accidental death, but also treason.
Zielonka accumulated a significant amount of money in his bank account, but since his disappearance, it remains untouched.
The officer’s knowledge is unique and if any foreign intelligence service were to get access to it, it be the cause of one of the biggest scandals of recent years in Poland, claims the daily Dziennik. Zielonka knows code names of Polish officers working abroad and has access to secret sources of information and contacts, including to NATO’s codes.
The National Security Office has submitted a secret report to President Lech Kaczynski on the case.
The worst possible scenario would be so-called ‘exfiltration,’ meaning that the warrant officer could have been forced abroad by a foreign secret service. (jg/mmj)
