The New Poland, a recent CNN International documentary series, has been prepared to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe.

TV fans from all around the world will have an opportunity to follow the last 20 years of Poland’s transformation. It starts with the historic election on 4 June 1989 when the Solidarity movement defeated the Communist Party in the first free polls in the Soviet bloc since the 1940s. The documentary ends with a review of Poland’s current position on the world stage.

“The combination of daily live programming and special reports from CNN correspondents in cities across Poland culminates on 4 June  with ‘Autumn of Change,’ an in-depth documentary that takes a retrospective look at the events leading up to the election exactly 20 years ago,” reads the CNN website.

The series takes place just eight months after Eye on Poland, a week-long coverage report on the current country’s situation.

This time, CNN focuses on such topics as the famous Gdansk’s shipyard, Polish Catholicism, cuisine or Poland’s unique film school.

However, the common thread tying the documentaries together is a chain of events that led to the liberation of eastern Europe from Soviet domination.

"CNN's combination of historic footage, comprehensive reporting and access to Poland’s key figures puts us in an unparalleled position to set the scene for how Poland was the catalyst for the Europe of today," said Mike McCarthy, vice president of coverage and feature programming for CNN International.
