Voters prefer newly elected MEP Zbigniew Ziobro to be president rather than the present head of state Lech Kaczynski, according to a survey by PBS DGA.
Respondents were given three pairs of politicians from the main political parties: Civic Platform, the Law and Justice party and Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) and asked to choose one person from each pair who would do best as president of Poland.
The results of the survey show that within the Law and Justice party, Zbigniew Ziobro, the newly elected MEP and former justice minister, proved to be more popular than President Lech Kaczynski. Ziobro gained twice as many votes as the head of state. He was supported by 39 percent of respondents, while Lech Kaczynski by only 19 percent.
With Civic Platform supporters, PM Donald Tusk still leads the pack over all potential candidates for the presidential election scheduled for next year. Thirty seven percent of voters regard him as the best candidate for head of state.
However, former prime minister Jerzy Buzek who was elected in the Slask district in the European Parliament elections on June 7 with 400,000 votes, was considered by 28 percent of respondents to be a better candidate for the post.
In the results of the survey for the Democratic Left Alliance, former foreign minister Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz is favoured above Grzegorz Napieralski, present head of the SLD. Cimoszewicz was supported by 50 percent of voters and Napieralski gathered only 18 percent.
The survey was conducted on 9 June among a sample of 500. (mg/pg)
