On Wednesday, blind people from all over Poland are set to issue a protest against the result of the EP elections.
The blind claim that during the European Parliament elections on 7 June, their voting rights were violated. The seeing impaired community did not manage to cast their votes as all other citizens of Poland did, i.e. in a secret ballot. In order to vote, people had to disclose the information about who they support to a third party, which, according to electoral law, was illegal.
Those who entered polling stations alone with the aim to vote by themselves were surprised to find that no one from the electoral commission was able to help them. As a result, many of them did not vote at all as they did not know how to fill in ballot sheets.
“Over a year ago we came up with a solution to the problem. It’s quite simple. All you need is a plastic or cardboard overlay on a ballot sheet with holes in it and numbers written in Braille,” told thenews.pl Jacek Zadrozny, initiator of the protest from Foundation for Regional Development.
“Although the idea was presented to the National Electoral Commission over a year ago, it has not been implemented yet. That’s why we decided to issue a peaceful protest and hope that finally our voice will be heard,” said Zadrozny.
The Supreme Court will decide whether the EP elections’ result can be revoked. (mg/mmj)
