Welfare payments to flood victims may start as soon as next Monday, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister Grzegorz Schetyna has announced.

Visiting regions most damaged by recent floods, Grzegorz Schetyna said the government can provide money as soon as next week.

“We are ready to start the procedure on Monday and will include benefits for people affected by the floods, who can apply for allowances,” said Schetyna in the south eastern region of Podkarpacie.

“I hope that we will soon be able to finish the rescue action and start giving out benefits,” Schetyna added and thanked authorities and fireman for their effective reaction to the crisis which saw the death of a 45 year old man and hundreds of homes flooded this week, as storms ravish wide areas of Central Europe.

The Deputy Prime Minister was not the only politician to visit the flooded towns. The deputy head of the President’s Chancellery, Wladyslaw Stasiak, went there alongside Stasiak.

“I am not saying that we will rebuild anybody’s house, but we can provide money for crucial medical equipment, for example,” Wladyslaw Stasiak declared.

In the evening, Stasiak and Schetyna will meet back in Warsaw to exchange information they collected during individual tours of the region.

“We are acting as one administration, I am doing my best to make us play as one team,” declared Stasiak in an unusual show of unity between Presidential Palace and government. (jg/pg)
