While criminal activity in Poland is decreasing, drug-related arrests are on the rise.
Central Police Headquarters released statistics that show that from January to May this year, there were 32,000 arrests related to narcotics. In 2008, for the same period, almost 23,000 such arrests were made.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) reports that in 2006, there existed 85 drug trafficking groups in Poland. In December 2008, 147 such groups existed.
The daily Rzeczpospolita writes that drug dealers are changing their tactics in order to avoid detection. Instead of hijacking trucks or smuggling cigarettes, drug rings are sticking to dealing in narcotics for a simple reason: the money is better.
“The profits, even for those at the bottom of a dealer’s pyramid, are huge,” maintains an investigator in the drug unit at CBI.
Narcotics investigators claim that Poland could be seeing an increasing trend in drug trade. (mmj)
