Kronos, the world’s most famous string quartet, is billed tomorrow at the Szczecin Music Fest on the Baltic coast.

Founded in 1973 by David Harrington, it has gained a worldwide reputation for its interpretations of contemporary music of a wide range of genres, from experimental music, to jazz, Mexican tango and even arrangements of Jimi Hendrix’s compositions.

The concert in Szczecin, the only during the ensemble’s brief visit to Poland, has generated great interest among Polish fans. The 2009 Szczecin Music Fest has attracted such stars as Nicola Conte (24 May), Chick Corea (24 June) and Calexico (7 July).

The Kronos Quartet has played a great role in the promotion of music by the Polish composer Henryk Mikołaj Gorecki. He dedicated all of his three string quartets to the Kronos: Already it is Dusk (1988), Quasi una fantasia (1991) and  ‘Songs are Sung’. (2005). (mk)
