• Eight dead as more storms ravage Poland
  • 24.07.2009

UPDATE - Storms swept across southern and central Poland last night, leaving eight people dead, and 34 severely injured.

Many roads are impassable, says spokesperson for the chief of the fire services, Pawel Fratczak, Friday morning.

"Three people died in the southern province of Lower Silesia, one in the central Wielkopolskie region and two in the Łodzkie province,” said the spokesman. “Heavy winds have felled hundreds of trees, seriously obstructing local, regional and national roads."

The winds left houses damaged, power lines down, and hampered rail traffic in its wake. Firefighters across the regions are removing the debris. More storms are expected in the southern regions of the country today. (ab/pg)
