A typical Polish baby sitter is over twenty years old and lives in a big city, shows the first all-Polish report on baby sitters conducted by the internet portal Niania.pl.
In Poland the majority of baby sitters are women. Out of 110,000 people who work as nannies, only 1,500 are men, i.e., 1.3 percent. Over a half of baby sitters live and work in big cities: Warsaw, Krakow, Lodz, Poznan and Wroclaw.
An average baby sitter takes care of small children up to three years old and has two-years of experience in her profession. Rarely does she live with the family whose children she takes care of and, from time to time, she is asked to perform additional household duties. A baby sitter in Poland works seven hours a day and earns 11.35 zloty (2.8 euro) per hour, which amounts to about 1,700 zloty (414 euro) a month.
It is usually students, retired teachers, nurses and kindergarten teachers who work as baby sitters. Out of 98,000 baby sitters, taken into account in the report, 64 percent are under 25 years old, 20 percent are between 25 and 40 years old and 16 percent – over 40 years old. (mg/mmj)
