The Ministry of Education wants all schools to have lockers for pupils by the beginning of a school year.
The Minister of Education, Katarzyna Hall, is to sign an agreement on safety and hygiene in schools, according to which, all primary schools in Poland will have to provide pupils with lockers, where they could leave their text books and school accessories.
Some schools already have book lockers but for others, the ministry’s regulation is a serious problem since they have no money for additional furniture.
“It will be a dead regulation,” maintains Marek Kilijanski from the Polish Physiotherapy Association. “It’s true that schoolbags are too heavy - they weigh up to 9 kg, almost half of what a child weighs. However, the regulation itself will not change much in that issue. Parents will not buy two sets of text books – one for school and one for home so children will have to carry them anyway,” claims Kilijanski. In his opinion, teachers should not ask pupils to bring all their books to classes, but only the most necessary ones. (mg/mmj)
