Maternity wards in Warsaw are packed as, this year, 500 more babies will be born in the capital of Poland.
In three Warsaw maternity hospitals on Inflancka, Madalinskiego and Zelazna Street, over 4,000 babies will be born this year. In July, in the hospital in Zelazna Street 433 babies were born, in comparison with 380 babies delivered in June.
In Warsaw there are not enough maternity hospitals so hospital rooms and even corridors are overcrowded. Sometimes pregnant women are sent from one hospital to another because of lack of places.
There is no problem with finding place in private clinics but the cost of childbirth is very high; in Medicover, for example, it costs 12,000 zloty (3,000 euro) to give birth to a baby. The city plans to build a new Southern Hospital in Ursynow with a maternity ward, but it is still unclear when the project will start. (mg/mmj)
