• Holiday closes ‘pilgrimage season’
  • 15.08.2009

Today is the Feast of the Assumption of Virgin Mary, one of the most important religious holiday in this largely Catholic country.

Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims have arrived at the nation's most famous pilgrimage destination, the Black Madonna of Jasna Gora Sanctuary in Czestochowa.

Most have travelled on foot, from all over Poland, for some, it took over two weeks of walking. Jasna Gora is Poland's most popular pilgrimage destination.

Meanwhile, Poland's Orthodox Christians set off on a pilgrimage to the Holy Mountain of Grabarka, one of the most important pilgrimage destination for Orthodox Christians in this country. They are to arrive on the spot on the 18th of August, on the Orthodox feast of Transfiguration, carrying big wooden crosses to be put around the Sanctuary. (jn/mmj)
