Today marks the 90th anniversary of the outbreak of the first of three Silesian Uprisings initiated against German rule on 16 August 1919. It was aimed at incorporating the territory into Poland.
A commemorative ceremony takes place today in Mysłowice, under the patronage of the province marshal of Upper Silesia.
The first uprising and two that followed were sparked by the disillusionment of the Polish population with the decision of the Versailles Treaty, which stipulated a plebiscite determining whether the territory should belong to Poland or Germany. The first insurgency was crushed by the Germans on 26 August 1919.
