  • 27.08.2009

As part of the 65th anniversary of the liquidation of the Lodz Ghetto by the Nazis, President Lech Kaczynski unveils a plaque today dedicated to Poles who saved or protected Jews.

Ewa Junczyk-Ziomecka from the President’s Chancellery said President Kaczynski would honour more than 50 people, many posthumously, with medals for saving Jews in wartime.

The initiator of the monument in Lodz is Halina Elczewska, one of the survivors of the ghetto. The monument stands in a park, where several years ago survivors each planted trees, 412 in all.  (jn)
