Politicians are asking why the prime minister of the Czech Republic received a telephone call from President Obama with news of the cancellation of the anti-missile system but PM Tusk did not.
The Czech Prime Minister John Fischer learned of the White House’s decision to scrap the anti-missile shield in his country, and Poland, just after midnight, Wednesday night, Thursday morning.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk did not have such a conversation, however.
It was reported yesterday by Gazeta Wyborcza that a source close to the prime minister said the telephone call with President Obama did not happen because of “technical difficulties”. But Prime Minister Tusk said later in the day that he wanted to be fully prepared for the call and delayed it until later on Thursday, after the US delegation arrived in Poland and Foreign Ministry Sikorski had talked to Secretary of State Hilary Clinton.
But opposition politicians are not convinced. Law and Justice MP Karol Karski made no secret of his indignation: “What was the Prime Minister doing: sleeping; watching or playing football?”
Jolanta Szymanek Deresz from the Democratic Left Alliance thought otherwise. “Probably no interpreter was at hand and therefore there was no conversation,” she said. (pg)
