The European Roller

Every two years, a species of bird dies out in the Podlasie region in eastern Poland and the European Roller is the next to go, warns the Polish Society for the Protection of Birds.

The Society (PTOP) warns, as well, that the Black Grouse is severely endangered and faces near extinction as only 1,000 of the birds are left in Poland. Scientists from all over Europe are currently gathered in Bialowieza, northeastern Poland, at the 5th European Conference of the Black Grouse, Endangered Species, which lasts until 9 October.

“There was a time when these birds were all over. Now, we know them only from books, which is why it is essential to try to do everything to save them,” claims Roman Kalski from PTOP.

The ornithologists gathered at the conference are working to determine what mainly endangers the birds and how this danger can be dealt with. Kalski maintains that the main problem is that the birds’ breeding grounds are being slowly destroyed and the forests in the region are experiencing overpopulation of foxes and raccoons. (mmj)
