• Marek Edelman laid to rest today

The funeral of Marek Edelman, leader of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, begins at noon in the capital today.

 
It is expected that friends and family will first pay their respects at the Ghetto Memorial before the funeral procession moves to the Jewish Cemetery.
 
Former premier Tadeusz Mazowiecki, editor-in-chief of Gazeta Wyborcza and Solidarity activist Adam Michnik, and writer Aleksander Smolar are expected to attend the funeral.
 
At the cemetery, Edelman is to receive a military burial, and will be laid to rest with his colleagues from the Jewish Combat Organisation.
 
Marek Edelman was the last surviving leader of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. He also took part in the Warsaw Rising, and after the war was a renowned cardiologist and oppositionist to the communist regime. He died on 2 October, aged 87. (jb)
