• Poles want early polls?
  • 12.10.2009

A growing number of Poles are in favour of holding parliamentary elections as early as two months from now.

According to a survey by GfK Institute for the Rzeczpospolita daily, as many as 47 percent of Poles think that the government of Donald Tusk should resign, thus paving the way for early elections. In July, only 32 percent of the respondents opted for  shortening the parliamentary term, which is due to end in the autumn of 2011.

Analysts attribute the latest swing in public opinion to the blackjack lobbying scandal, in which several government officials were accused of acting on behalf of businessmen trying to water down a bill on higher taxes on the gambling business. Three high-ranking politicians have resigned in the case. (mk/mmj)
