• Scandals fail to stick on Teflon Civic Platform
  • 21.10.2009

In spite of a host of corruption scandals, the ruling Civic Platform maintains a healthy lead in opinion polls.

According to a survey by Gfk Polonia, the ruling Civic Platform has lost just four percentage points in support and is still well ahead of other parties. Civic Platform is currently supported by 46 per cent of Poles, while its nearest rivals, the Law and Justice have 18 percent, a gain of only one percentage point.

Jacek Kloczkowski from the Centre of Political Thought thinks that Poles continue supporting Civic Platform for two reasons. Firstly, they do not view ‘Black Jack gate’ and other accusations of corruption leveled against the government as a major scandal, and, secondly, because there is no other party they can support instead. Law and Justice since the party is associated with the Central Anticorruption Bureau – the agency which is making the corruption allegations against Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s party – and is not a popular unit in Poland.

A benefactors of the latest scandals are the Democratic Left Alliance, which though only supported by 12 percent of the electorate has gained four percent in the last month.

Survey by Gfk Polonia was conducted among 991 Poles. Its results are similar to those from a survey by SMG/KRC. (mg)
