Almost a hundred pedophiles ready to leave Polish prisons will not be monitored by the state.
In Polish prisons there are 1,100 criminals convicted for the rape of a minor, meaning children under 15 years of age, and many re-offend after leaving prison.
Since 2005, Polish courts have the right to isolate pedophiles from the rest of the society or send them for therapy. But, according to Justice Ministry data, Article 95 of the penal code 2008, which allows further confinement or medical treatment of sex offenders, was applied for only twice.
American studies suggest that 25 to 40 percent of pedophiles, who underwent rehabilitation and/or received pharmaceutical treatment, continued committing sex offences. In Poland there are no exact data on habitual sex offenders but it is estimated that the scale of the phenomenon is similar in both countries. (mg)
