The Warsaw Zoo is opening a shark tank that will include the black tip shark, two of which will be delivered to the zoo, located in the Praga district on the capital city, in the coming weeks.
“We have to see them in order to not buy a pig in a poke,” says Ewa Zbonikowska, deputy director of the zoo, adding that she will travel to Poznan, western Poland, to see the sharks where they are currently quarantined.
Zbonikowska added that, if the sharks are healthy, they will arrive in Warsaw in nine days, followed by two more sharks a few days later, accompanied by two grey nurse sharks.
The shark aquarium will be located in the new Hippopotamus House in a glass container that costs 350,000 zloty (about 90,000 euro). The black tip sharks cost 25,000 (6,000 euro) zloty each and the grey nurse sharks cost 99,000 zloty (about 24,000 euro) each.
The Hippopotamus House, together with the shark aquarium, will open on 15 November. Total cost of the new complex amounts to 23 million zloty (about 6 million euro). The oldest hippo in Europe, Aniela, already occupies the new building. (mmj)
