• 'Sokolka miracle not criminal'

The Prosecutor’s Office in Bialystok will not launch a criminal investigation into events at a local Roman Catholic church that have been dubbed “the miracle in Sokolka.”

The “miracle” took place after a consecrated wafer dropped by a priest during Mass held at the church, eastern Poland, apparently bled and a medical examination found it to contain tissue resembling that of a human heart.

The matter was reported to the prosecutor’s office by the Association of Polish Rationalists, who suspected violation of human remains or even murder but the prosecutor’s office decided it could not find any evidence of foul play.

The incident at the church in Sokolka has also been referred for investigation by the Vatican. (ek)
